Dream Big and Turn Ideals into Reality

As I’ve written on the blog before, I love the words about the Panamera’s concept featured on Porsche Japan’s website.

Dream big and turn ideals into reality.
Don’t simply charge ahead along the path you’ve already chosen. Keep challenging yourself to rethink every approach—and do things differently from everyone else.
Above all, what matters is courage.
Break with convention.
Stand firm with unwavering resolve.
Shape a future that has yet to be seen.
With courage, create a new world.
Only by doing so can Porsche remain Porsche.

The World the Panamera Aspires to Create

What powerful words… They sound so inspiring, but I imagine the reality is far from glamorous: more of a tough, down-to-earth journey filled with setbacks and steady, incremental improvements. Speaking for myself, about once every six months, my motivation at work takes a nosedive (laughs).

It’s not so much that I lose the will to work; it feels as if the wellspring of my motivation has run dry.

“This job and this position aren’t right for me. I’ve reached my limit. I should quit and find something else. If I ask that company, I’m sure they’ll hire me. And if I talk to that company, I can probably find work for my colleagues, too.”

There are times when I genuinely think that way. But then I might run into a former mentor who gives me a much-needed pep talk, hear kind words from a customer, or land a project that starts six months down the road. And suddenly I’m fired up again: “I can’t quit now. I still have so much more to give!” (I’m sorry to everyone around me who gets caught up in this emotional roller coaster.)

My own experiences don’t even come close to Porsche’s—not by a long shot. But pursuing your ideals is never an easy road. That’s why Porsche’s words at the start of this article resonate so deeply with me. And creating a Panamera that retains the soul of a sports car while offering the practicality of a four-door sedan? That’s right: Porsche keeps dreaming big and turning its ideals into reality. I think that’s truly cool.

“Make a bold promise—and deliver.” And behind it all is a conviction that never changes, even as the times do. Wow, Porsche. I’d better get back to work and give it my all, too!
