My Car-Loving Husband’s Take on the Porsche Boxster, Panamera, and Mercedes-Benz SL

The SL Is Making Regular Trips to the Shop
My husband recently bought a 1997 SL500. Given its age and the fact that it had been left sitting for a while after its previous owner passed away, it seems to have a few issues. The seats are worn, and apparently oil leaks from the roof when he opens or closes it. The “old man” SL has been spending a lot of time at the repair shop lately for maintenance.
Once its trips to the shop are over (lol), it should be in perfect, like-new condition. (For the record, I haven’t even ridden in it yet, let alone driven it.)
How Does My Husband Rate Each Car?
The other day, I wrote a post asking, “If you could choose between a 911, a Boxster, and a Panamera, which would you pick?” So I asked my husband how he’d rate the Boxster, Panamera, and SL. He said, “That’s a tough one—it depends on how you’d use it,” and came up with these scores:
① Royu Driveway (a moderately winding mountain road)
Boxster: 5
Panamera: 4.9
SL: 3
② Rural national roads
Boxster: 4
Panamera: 4.8
SL: 5
③ Highways
Boxster: 4.3
Panamera: 5
SL: 4.8
④ Around town
Boxster: 4.5
Panamera: 4.3
SL: 4.8
If You Could Choose Just One?
Then I asked, “If you could own only one of these three cars, which would you choose?”
“Hmm, let me think… If I had to pick the one that does a good job of everything, it’d be the Panamera. So, yeah, probably the Panamera.”
Well, that’s a relief. If he’d said he was keeping the Boxster, the whole family wouldn’t be able to go out together… (laughs). This just goes to show that the Panamera really is the one for us.
