A Special 993 911 Speedster Filling a Historic Gap

Looking back at Porsche’s history, there’s a notable gap in the late 1990s. The renowned German marque first introduced the 911 Speedster with the G-series and continued this distinctive open-top body style into the 964 generation. However, the following 993 generation never officially produced this unique model. To date, only two 993 Speedsters have been made by Porsche, one of which is now displayed at the Porsche Museum.

Amid this, Porsche’s custom division, Sonderwunsch, has announced the completion of a third 993 Speedster. This special car was built for Luca Truzzi, a Milan-based designer and passionate collector. Truzzi commissioned Porsche’s bespoke team to transform a 1994 911 Carrera Cabriolet into a true Speedster, featuring a two-seat layout, a shortened windshield, and the iconic rear cowl.

Mechanics Inheriting the DNA of the Carrera RS

Mechanically, this Speedster shares many chassis, steering, and brake components with the 993-generation 911 Carrera RS. Most importantly, its engine has been upgraded to the same specifications originally fitted to the Carrera RS, boasting a 3.8-liter displacement and producing around 300 horsepower.

Combined with a lightweight, compact body, this power unit delivers dynamic performance. Paired with the well-balanced chassis of the 993 911, this Speedster is a pure driver’s car, focused on delivering the ultimate driving pleasure.

Design Infused with the Owner’s Passion

On the styling front, Truzzi took a leading role in crafting his one-of-a-kind car, a process that took about three years. He worked closely with the Sonderwunsch team and even gained access to Porsche’s internal archives for inspiration.

The result features elements inspired by the 993 Turbo, such as the front splitter, side skirts, and rear quarter panels. The seats showcase a checkerboard pattern reminiscent of classic 911s, while the cabin incorporates modern materials like carbon fiber, blending old and new seamlessly.

The body color, a new shade called “Otto Yellow,” is named after Truzzi’s beloved dog. At the rear, the Speedster’s signature “double bubble” shape adds a sporty, racing-inspired flair.

Continuing the Legacy of the 993 Speedster

Technically, this is the third factory-built 993-generation 911 Speedster, and the most sporty and thoroughly commissioned to date. The first was completed in 1995 for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, combining a Carrera body with a Tiptronic transmission. The second, based on a 4S variant with widened fenders, was built in 2001 and is now privately owned.

This latest 993 Speedster for Truzzi is a unique creation but also signals Porsche and its Sonderwunsch division’s eagerness to produce more special cars. Considering the extensive development involved, it’s likely we’ll see more one-off models in the near future.

This exceptional car exemplifies how Porsche sincerely listens to its customers and realizes their desires with top-tier technology. For Porsche owners, projects like this deepen their bond with their cars and inspire dreams of someday owning a bespoke masterpiece of their own.
