When you think of the Porsche 911, its signature flat-six engine comes to mind. Mounted in the rear, this engine has captivated many Porsche owners with its unique sound and feel.
However, there are some daring enthusiasts who boldly ditch this iconic heart and swap in a completely different engine.
Today, we introduce a Porsche 996 fitted with a Honda K24 engine, featured on the overseas YouTube channel “The Drive.” This video has stunned countless car lovers and is rapidly gaining views.
Why the K24 Engine?
The Honda K24 engine is an inline-four found in models like the Accord and CR-V. It’s popular as a tuning base, known for its durability and ease of modification.
The owner who performed this swap was inspired by a friend’s K-series engine-powered Smart car and decided to install a K24 engine in his own 996.
The K24 is affordable and readily available, capable of high output with the right tuning. Plus, if it breaks down, repairing it is far cheaper than fixing a Porsche flat-six—one of the big advantages of this swap.
A Monster Machine with Over 500 Horsepower
The K24 engine in this 996 isn’t just stock. It features a newly machined block, a Pulsar 6262G twin-scroll turbo, Haltech 1500 Elite ECU, IGN-1a race coils, a BMW 335i intercooler, a custom intake manifold, upgraded fuel pumps, and more.
Using Kennedy Engineering Products’ adapter plate, clutch, and flywheel kit, the Honda engine connects seamlessly to the Porsche transmission. An LSD is also installed to efficiently transfer the immense power to the road.
Before the swap, the dyno test showed 256 horsepower from the original Porsche engine. After the Honda swap, it jumped to over 500 horsepower—and there’s still room for more power.
Is the Swap More Realistic Than You Think?
Many engine swaps start with a car that has a broken engine. However, the 3.4-liter flat-six in this 996 was running fine. The owner removed it and sold it to another 996 owner, using the proceeds to fund the swap.
The 996’s flat-six is also known for issues like the infamous cylinder 6 problem and intermediate shaft failures. Given these troubles, selling a good engine to finance a swap might be a smart move.
As a professional welder, the owner fabricated many of the parts needed for the swap himself. He now even sells engine mount kits for other 996 owners.

This unconventional swap has sparked a variety of opinions among Porsche enthusiasts. Some say it’s “losing the soul of Porsche” or “heresy,” while others find it “exciting” and see “new possibilities.”
The owner states, ‘No matter what others say, enjoying the car is what matters most. Of course, there are negatives and people who complain, but at the end of the day, a car is just bolts, nuts, sheet metal, and an engine.’
Personally, I find this swap fascinating. While it’s great to honor Porsche’s traditions, creative customizations like this enrich car culture.
