I Want to Drive on the Autobahn
The prize was a trip for two. The travel dates would be arranged for around November 2017, to suit the winner’s schedule.
“Arranged to suit the winner’s schedule”—how thoughtful! So I immediately clicked “Enter to win a trip to Germany.” The thing is, whenever something like this happens, my imagination runs wild.
What if I actually won…
November… Could I ask my parents to look after the kids? My husband said he’d be away on a long business trip from the end of November, so maybe we could go before then. I could probably work things out, too. The Autobahn… Oh, right, I’d need an international driving permit! What would I say to my husband first if I won? He’d be so surprised! (゜∀。)
With all that going through my head, I agreed to the terms and conditions, then moved on to the form. Name, address, date of birth, email… For hobbies, of course, I checked “driving.” Then, for the car I owned, I selected Porsche Panamera.
And then…
“When is your next vehicle inspection due?”
The inspection… I was pretty sure it was in 2019, so I entered that. And the questions kept coming.
“When are you planning to buy a car?”
□ Within one month □ Within three months □ Within six months □ Within one year □ No plans
I wasn’t planning to buy another car anytime soon. But if I selected “No plans,” there was no way I’d win that trip to Germany… I could feel the battle raging in my head. All right, I’d click “Within one year.” More questions followed.
“Please select the Audi models you’re interested in.”
There were several models listed, but honestly, I don’t know much about Audi. Checking the A6 or A7 would make it sound like I was thinking of replacing the Panamera, which felt a little too realistic, so I went with the A4 quattro. That should make me sound like someone who enjoys driving. At last, I reached the final question.
“May an authorized Audi dealer contact you with information about new vehicles and campaigns?”
……
……I’d rather not (-_- )
At that point, they’d probably try to figure out whether I was genuinely considering buying an Audi soon. I couldn’t pretend I was interested just because I wanted the trip, then keep going on test drives. But if they contacted me, I couldn’t bring myself to say, “Sorry, I’m actually not planning to buy one.”
No, I just couldn’t do it. Even if I went through with it, I’m sure the gods would see right through me—and I probably wouldn’t win anyway. So I gave up. With a heavy heart, I clicked the X at the very last moment and closed the site. Honestly, I know I’m a bit of a coward. But if you’re interested, by all means, give it a try.
