The New 911 (992) Makes Its Debut
Today, the 28th at 1 PM, the eighth generation “New Porsche 911 (992)” officially debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show (local time: 8 PM on the 27th). The event was live-streamed on News TV Porsche, so I sat in front of my computer starting at 12:55 PM, eagerly waiting.
They really kept us waiting! (laughs)
Live Stream Begins
At 1 PM, the words of Ferry Porsche, the creator of the 911, were introduced first,
followed by a lineup of past 911 models in order. First up was the original 911 (901), which entered full production in 1964.
Next, the ’73 Carrera RS.
Then, the 964 that we have at home. I’ve never seen this body color before.
And then, the last air-cooled 911, the 993.
The first water-cooled 996, known for its “teary eyes.”
Then, the 997 model.
And the current 991. That green is beautiful.
With all seven generations of 911 lined up, the moment finally arrived for the new 911 (992) to make its entrance.
As previously scooped, the rear features a continuous taillight connecting across, similar to the Panamera and new Cayenne, while the front design seems to return somewhat to the earlier 911 style.
The interior has also changed significantly, with a much fresher look to the center console.
More About the New 911 (992)
The horizontally opposed 6-cylinder twin-turbo engine has been further developed, delivering 331 kW (450 PS) in the S model. Also, Porsche Wet Mode, which enhances safety on wet roads, is now standard worldwide for the first time, and new assist systems such as Night Vision Assist equipped with a thermal imaging camera are included.
The 0-100 km/h acceleration times are 3.7 seconds for the Carrera S and 3.6 seconds for the Carrera 4S, both surpassing the previous models.
The new 911 series (992) will launch with the “Carrera S” and “Carrera 4S” models, both equipped exclusively with an 8-speed PDK transmission. The base “Carrera” model is expected to arrive in 2019, at which time a 7-speed manual transmission will also become available. The convertible “Cabriolet” model is also rumored to debut in 2019.
We’re all curious about the pricing for the Japanese market, and I’ll share updates here on the blog as soon as more information becomes available.
