On June 16, 2021, Japan time, Porsche announced the new 911 (992 generation) GT3 Touring Package.
992 new model launch included a statement from Andreas Preuninger, Porsche’s GT product line director, who confirmed the existence of the Touring Package as expected.
This time, I’d like to explain the announcement from the perspective of a former owner of the previous GT3 Touring Package.
What is the Touring Package?
The GT3 Touring Package is an option package introduced from the later phase of the 991 generation (991.2). Unlike the regular GT3, it does not have a rear wing, making it look at first glance like a standard Carrera.
Originally, Porsche released a limited edition 911R during the early 991 phase, which was essentially a GT3 RS without the wing. It became extremely popular, causing used car prices to skyrocket. To curb this price surge, Porsche introduced the Touring Package.
The name “Touring Package” comes from a variation of the 1973 911 Carrera RS model and has been a traditional name used in models like the 964 Carrera RS as well.
Features of the New GT3 Touring Package
The most notable feature is, of course, the absence of the rear wing. Like the previous 991 model, the basic suspension and setup remain the same as the standard GT3, aside from the exterior and interior appearance, and it seems the 992 continues this tradition.

Choosing the Touring Package’s black exhaust tips results in a satin gloss black finish.
Instead of a fixed wing, the car is equipped with an electrically operated rear spoiler that rises at high speeds, securing downforce. This makes it look like a standard Carrera at first glance, just like its predecessor.
Also, the “GT3” badge is removed, and only “GT3 Touring” is embossed on the engine hood. This understated detail perfectly reflects the character of the GT3 Touring.
Other exterior differences include silver window trim and body-colored front aero parts, which distinguish it clearly from the standard GT3.
Inside, like the previous model, the interior is predominantly leather. The steering wheel rim, gear/selector lever, center console cover, door panel armrests, and door handles are all leather-trimmed. The dashboard and center console trims are matte black aluminum.
Additionally, the dashboard front and upper door trim panels feature a special embossing.
The seats can be chosen as either sports seats or full bucket seats, just like the standard GT3, but instead of “GT3” embroidery on the headrests, the Porsche Crest is embossed, a unique trait of the Touring Package.
The seat centers are covered in black fabric rather than leather. Personally, since it’s a Touring Package, I would prefer to choose sports seats over full bucket seats for everyday driving.
Most options available on the standard GT3 appear to be selectable on the Touring Package as well, allowing you to customize your ideal GT3 Touring Package.
What are the specs of the new GT3 Touring Package?
The specs of the new GT3 Touring Package are the same as the standard GT3. The 4.0-liter six-cylinder flat-six engine produces 375 kW (510 PS), and you can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
The previous GT3 Touring Package was only available with a manual, so the availability of the PDK is a major new difference. If I were ordering one, I would personally choose the PDK.
This is because, based on my experience with the previous 991, operating this racing engine with a manual geared for the racetrack while driving smoothly on city streets was quite challenging.
The weight is 1,418 kg with the manual transmission and 1,435 kg with the Porsche Dual-Clutch Transmission (PDK), which is quite light for a car with a 4.0-liter engine. The previous generation weighed 1,470 kg, and my own car’s registration documents confirmed that, so this represents about a 50 kg reduction (though it varies significantly depending on options).
What is the price of the new GT3 Touring Package?
The GT3 Touring Package is priced the same as the standard GT3, with no additional charge for choosing the Touring Package.
At the time of writing, the Japanese market price for the GT3 is 22,960,000 yen. Adding options worth 2 to 3 million yen, the actual on-road price is expected to be around 25 million yen.
