What did Porsche drivers think of the Subaru WRX STI?

Subaru WRX STI
Reviews & Test Rides

STI, run at a faster pace.

After getting used to the car, I pick up the pace a little and try to turn a corner. I see.The car cuts into the road with a great deal of force at the start of the cut, and the movement is completely different from that of an ordinary passenger car.

The nose feels like it goes in tight and is firmly planted, but as it cuts in further, the roll is more wobbly and stronger. Here it is.I'd like to beef up the stabilizers a bit more. That's my impression. Then, for a brief moment, the tires squeal and understeer appears.

The tires were ADVAN Sport V105. The tires are not so weak that they would scream at such a small amount of pressure, so perhaps the air pressure was not correct.

The body rolls outward and sinks into the corner, and from that point on, the car turns the corner in a very stable manner. The tires seem to be firmly grounded under a certain amount of G-force and load.

DCCD for Subaru WRX STI

The DCCD (Driver's Control Center Differential), which controls the four-wheel drive, was AUTO, but in any case, I don't know if there was some kind of torque distribution control of the four-wheel drive on the way or if the ESP intervened. The slight change in the car's behavior from the beginning to the end of a corner takes some getting used to.I felt as if it was a good idea.

The owner later told us that the following STI parts were installed, which may have had no small influence.

  • Flexible Tower Bar Front
  • Flexible Draw Stiffer Front
  • Support Front Kit
  • Flexible support sub-frame rear
  • Flexible Draw Stiffer Rear
  • Lateral link set
  • Coil spring F+R
  • exhaust kit
  • air cleaner element

This may sound like an unwieldy car, but it's not.It seems to be more for advanced users than difficult to handle. It is a car that should be driven with a good understanding of the car's characteristics, movement, and engine torque output. It is a car with high performance, no doubt, but it is necessary to understand the car's intentions while interacting with it, and operate it accordingly. That is how I felt.

Subaru WRX STI

If you have this car.If you drive badly, such as by steering late and turning the wheel sharply after coming to a curve, without being aware of the load or anything else, you will be driving in a very scary manner. It must be. It is a car that requires driving that is faithful to the basics: steering the car slowly from the front, and cutting into the curve as the curve deepens.

How does it differ from the Porsche 718?

Because of its horizontally opposed engine, it is easily compared to Porsche (especially the 718, etc.), and some may consider it a comparison, but I think it is a car with very different tastes.

I'm just making a comparison. The 718, for example, has a much firmer, more rigid, and more grounded feel, and it does not leave the road surface for a moment, but runs faithfully to the driver's control.in contrast toIn the case of the WRX, more nimbleness and lightness of the vehicle body. The car turns lightly, and the driver is entertained by the turbocharged power and acceleration that seems to push the car forward. The car turns lightly, and the driver is entertained by the turbo's effect and acceleration, which seems to push the car forward.

Subaru WRX STI

After all, it is a rally car in its own right. Since the name of the car is no longer the same, it may be strange to compare it with the STI of more than 20 years ago, but I am sure it would be fun to drive this car on snow-covered roads to ski resorts as it used to be.

The turbochargers and the handling of the car have a taste of that. One of the few cars that have the "mischievousness" that recent cars have lost.Id.

Thank you to the owner for lending us his valuable car.

I am Mina's husband. We don't drive cars for fashion or status symbols. We like cars that are fun to drive, are good industrial products, and have a sense of the maker's intention...

    Hi Mina.

I'm the one who gave up my WRX-Sti to replace the GT4, so I'm a bit of a jerk.

    I don't think the current WRX-Sti is rally spec as it is Nurburgring spec. lol;
The last WRC homologation model I had was the GRB, and after that it was a car to win the Nurburgring 24H.
    For your reference.

I'm not interested in the latest Imp, so I haven't even test-driven it, but it seems to have different specifications from the rally machines.
In which mode did you run?
In town, S (Sports) mode is the most suitable.

As for the car's behavior, the front/rear torque distribution is automatically variable from F30-R70 to F50-R50, so perhaps you felt some discomfort in that area.
Personally, I think it is a good feature because it tracks and grabs the road surface even when accelerating wide open.
I think it is interesting because with RWD, the front pulls you in situations where you are at the limit and usually drive in a RWD-like manner.

    However, if full torque is applied at high rpm, sudden switching may cause a light differential lock (^^;

Hello, I'm a new member of the team and I'd like to thank you for all your support. Thank you for everything!
Thank you for all the information you have provided.
Due to our schedule, we did not have much time to test drive the car, so I wondered if we could have experienced more if we had been able to drive on a wider variety of roads.
I'd love to ride it again sometime!
