Why It’s Easy to Hop in Our Porsche Boxster but Somehow Not Our 911

Our 911 Cabriolet (992)
One day, my husband casually said,
The Boxster GTS is easy to drive around nearby or for quick trips, but when it comes to the 911 (Cabriolet), it feels like a waste to use it just to go to the local convenience store or for a short drive, so he rarely drives it…
Even though he knows that the 911 is a sports car you can use every day, emotionally, it’s just harder to hop in casually.
I think I understand that feeling. My husband isn’t the type to worry about mileage and is the kind of person who believes “a car is meant to be driven”, but even so, he doesn’t feel as comfortable casually driving our 911 Cabriolet.
Part of it is probably because the Porsche 911 has been a dream car for him since he was a child, and it’s such an iconic, special symbol for Porsche that even though it’s parked in our garage and ready to go anytime, he still hesitates to take it out just for a quick trip.
The other day, when we wanted to buy coffee beans at a nearby café, the parking lot was too tight for the Cayenne, but since the 911 Cabriolet was at home, we could have taken it. However, he thought, “It feels like too much to take the 911 out just for that…”, so in the end, I walked there carrying our son in a baby carrier.
On the way back, we had to climb a steep hill, and carrying our 10kg son was tough, so while waiting at the bus stop, my husband happened to drive by and kindly gave us a ride (laughs).
Well, there’s really no need to be that careful though…
Porsche Body Colors and Interiors
About this, my husband said something that made me think.
Maybe the vibe of our 911 affects this feeling. We chose Aventurine Green Metallic for the body and beige for the interior, giving it a mature, luxurious atmosphere.
That might make it feel even harder to drive casually.
This is just his personal feeling, but if the interior were black and the body color silver, it would feel like a sports car you could drive anywhere—from daily use to the racetrack—and probably feel easier to drive regularly.
And for our Boxster, the white body and black interior, which doesn’t show dirt easily, might be why it feels more casual and easy to drive.
I think a car’s entire atmosphere can change dramatically depending on the body color and interior, even within the same model.
Regarding the 911, (just my personal impression, though) a white 911 feels elegant and refined, a black 911 looks a bit tough and has the vibe of a sports car ready to push hard, a bright red 911 is very stylish and urban, and a bright blue 911 stands out beautifully anywhere—whether in the city or surrounded by seasonal nature—making you want to drive to scenic spots.
I’ve always dreamed, “If I were to buy a 911, I’d want a bright red one. It’s stylish, rare in the city, and just cool”, but knowing my personality, which tends to get overwhelmed by the vibe and feel intimidated,
I’m not the kind of stylish, elegant woman who suits a bright red 911. I’ll wait until I go to the gym, lose weight, and look good in skinny jeans before I drive one…
I end up not driving it regularly (laughs).
If you’re someone who wants to keep their beloved car in pristine condition in the garage and doesn’t drive it often, preferring to admire it, then choosing a highly customized specification will surely be very satisfying. But if you want to drive your car hard and often without worrying too much, being too particular might make you hesitate to drive it, which is a shame.
…Well, if you say I’m overthinking it, that’s fair, but these days I really do think body color affects how easy it is to use a car daily, to some extent.
