718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Engine Feel, Ride Comfort, and More

By the way, regarding engine characteristics, I want to compare it with the NA 4.0-liter GT3 engine that shares the same bore and stroke. The conclusion is that the feel is “quite different.”

First, the low-end torque is stronger in the GTS 4.0. It’s overwhelmingly easier and more manageable to drive in the city. The engine sound differs too: while the GT3 engine has mechanical noise and a powerful, piercing sound, the GTS 4.0’s sound is more exhaust-focused with a bit of a rhythmic beat.

And the biggest difference is in the high rev range. The GTS 4.0 engine revs very well, but the GT3 engine accelerates its revs exponentially as it climbs higher, even evoking a sense of awe or fear.

That’s the GT3’s signature performance shining through.

As for handling, I didn’t get to test it much this time, but it basically follows the tradition of previous 718 models. It feels more planted than the 981, especially with a firm rear grip.

If I had to add one more point, I’d say the ride comfort on this GTS 4.0 felt notably good. From the start, it’s smooth yet firm, with no harshness on city roads.

Among the Porsches I’ve experienced recently, this ride comfort ranks in the top one or two. The suspension feels tightened but rides on high-quality rubber bushings. Yet it’s not soft or mushy at all, so there’s no sense of insecurity—just excellent chassis balance.

While the name “GTS” might suggest a sportier, harder ride, the previous 981 GTS was also very comfortable. Adding to that, the GTS 4.0’s engine and transmission are very easy to handle, so in terms of ride quality, it feels more like an “S Plus” grade than a traditional “GTS.”

After driving the GTS 4.0, if any readers are considering their first Porsche purchase, I would absolutely recommend this model. It’s packed with the best qualities of recent Porsches.

If I were to compare it to a fine dining experience, it might be like a seasonal special menu—using popular ingredients to create a flavor that appeals to a wide audience.

Of course, for those seeking a spicier dish, the Spyder and GT4 are also available.

This time, Porsche threw the ball right into the catcher’s mitt at the center of the plate. A naturally aspirated 6-cylinder, mid-engine, high power, attractive sound, honest handling, and easy drivability—all combined in one sports car. The GTS 4.0 is truly impressive.
