20 Years On, the Carrera GT Delivers an Astonishing Lap Time

Porsche’s iconic Carrera GT has returned to the Nürburgring—and this time, it has posted a remarkable lap that significantly improves on its record from 20 years ago.

Sport Auto took on the challenge with a yellow Carrera GT, driven by Porsche factory driver Jörg Bergmeister. The result: a lap of the 20.6-kilometer Nordschleife in 7:12.69.

That time is said to be 16 seconds faster than the previous best, set in 2004 by legendary driver Walter Röhrl. Even more remarkable, it brings the Carrera GT to within 15 seconds of the modern Porsche 918 Spyder. Eleven years ago, the 918 Spyder became the first production car to break the seven-minute barrier, lapping the circuit in 6:57.

Newly Developed Tires Unlock the Carrera GT’s Potential

A key factor behind the new lap time was a newly developed set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires from Porsche. A few months ago, Porsche launched a recall campaign for the Carrera GT and, along with newly developed titanium suspension components, reportedly supplied the tires to all owners free of charge.

Tire technology has advanced dramatically over the past 20 years, making a significant difference on track. The new Michelin tires provided ample grip, allowing Bergmeister to put in lap after lap while deftly managing understeer and oversteer.

The Carrera GT’s Appeal Endures 20 Years Later

More than 20 years after its debut, the Carrera GT delivered remarkably composed performance on track. It has none of the extreme aerodynamic add-ons seen on many modern supercars, and its pure sports-car character remains intact: rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.

On the circuit’s main straight, it reached a top speed of 302 km/h (187.6 mph)—impressive performance for a car from two decades ago.

Porsche Engineering Continues to Move Forward

Tire technology has advanced significantly since the Carrera GT first went on sale. It has been 11 years since the 918 Spyder set its Nürburgring record, and with the latest tires, it seems entirely possible that the 6:57 benchmark could be beaten again.

Even so, the Carrera GT’s ability to come within 15 seconds of its far more powerful and advanced successor is an impressive achievement. The result is a fresh reminder of Porsche’s engineering expertise and the Carrera GT’s remarkable potential.

For Porsche owners, knowing that their cars can continue to evolve over the years must be a source of real satisfaction. Porsche’s ongoing support for its older models—and its commitment to bringing the latest technology to them—helps make the brand even more special.

I love long-distance touring, and I believe a car only counts when you drive it. On days off I travel around Japan in our cars. On the blog I mainly write test-drive reports and touring notes, and I also look after the...
