The Best Time to Buy a Porsche Is When You Want One|Lessons from Buying a 911

So glad I bought the Carrera T.
My first Porsche, the 911 Carrera T, was delivered at the end of May.
Four months have passed, and the mileage is almost 4,500 km now.
I use it for everything—from grocery runs, dropping off and picking up the kids, taking them to the dentist or dermatologist, to work. Lately, I feel it’s really becoming my partner on the road (though I still want to take it on better roads).
And now, I realize once again:
The best time to buy a Porsche is when you want one.
“I want one, but the money…”
“Can I really maintain it properly?”
“I want one, but maybe it’s too soon for me.”
Before deciding to buy, all sorts of doubts swirl around. But for me, I’m really glad I made the decision to buy back then.
Because if you keep thinking “maybe a few years from now…” the model you want might no longer be available.
The model you want isn’t something you can just buy anytime, forever.
Also, sports cars like Porsche aren’t absolutely necessary for daily life (…I might be saying this wrong, but generally speaking, a minivan is way more practical and useful). So buying one requires a bit of boldness.
The more you think about it, the more you might convince yourself, “Maybe I don’t really need it after all…” But I still feel the best time to buy is when you truly want it.
My Encounter with the Carrera T
That said, until around last summer, I thought, “Buying a Porsche is still a long way off for me.“
I vaguely thought, “I want a 911, but I want to save up a down payment and maybe buy a late-model 992 in about three years.” Then one day, a Porsche owner I know said something that really shook me.
Even if you want one three years from now, you might not be able to buy it then. Right now, many people are already lining up and making reservations to buy the early 992 models. On top of that, no one knows when—or if—the late model will come out (at that time).
Instead of saying “I’ll buy it someday” leisurely, if you really want one, you should at least let the dealer know now, “I want the late 992 model.“
Hearing this, I was deeply moved (I’m pretty simple-minded, haha) and the next day I contacted my dealer rep, H-san, saying, “When the late model comes out, I want to buy it, so please let me know immediately.“
At that time, of course, I hadn’t saved enough for a down payment, and I thought it was absolutely impossible to buy a Porsche with my current finances. But I took the plunge and made my intentions clear.
A few months later, the dealer contacted me:
“We don’t know when the late 992 model will be released, but reservations for the early 992 Carrera T have started. Would you like to put in a reservation? Although we can’t guarantee you’ll get one or that a slot will be allocated to you…“
I immediately consulted my husband, who said,
You have to reply quickly to these things. If you hesitate, you might miss the chance to reserve. Think it over properly, but don’t wait too long to respond.
However, when I checked the Carrera T configurator at the time, there were hardly any options for wheels or extras, and features like PCCB, which were available on the 991 Carrera T, weren’t selectable.
“Is this really the one I should buy? Is it worth buying the early model now instead of waiting for the late model…?” I worried even more. But my husband said again,
You’re not going to drive it forever, right? If it’s not what you expected, you can sell it after a few years. The Carrera T is rare, so it probably won’t depreciate too much.
“That’s right. If I like it, great. If not, I can learn from it and switch later. Nothing starts unless I take the plunge and buy it!” So I made the reservation, and luckily, I got a production slot.
Still, I’m quite a worrier, so even during the final procedures before delivery, I was still doubting, “Did I really do the right thing? Can I pay off the loan…?” My dealer rep H-san even joked, “Um… maybe I shouldn’t have sold it to you? Haha.”
…But the moment I saw my Carrera T on delivery day, all those worries vanished instantly.
What is this? It’s insanely cool! Seriously, so cool!
At first, the driving didn’t quite click, but after 300 km, 500 km, the engine response improved, the engine sound got louder, it felt more natural in my hands…
Now, without a shadow of a doubt, I truly believe I made the right choice. That’s the magic of Porsche (laughs).
Honestly, the monthly payments are pretty tough (I wrote about this in detail here), but somehow I manage, and I’m more motivated to earn, more passionate about work (which is why I haven’t been able to write much on the blog lately, which frustrates me)… and I’m starting to see my income increase.
The best time to buy a Porsche is when you want one.
This is my humble experience, but that’s how I feel these days.
