911 Carrera Cabriolet Delivery

The other day, we finally took delivery of the long-awaited 911 Cabriolet (992 model). Since we ordered it at the end of February this year, the wait was about seven months. You can read about the timeline from order to delivery here I had thought, “The COVID situation will probably cause a big delay,” but production started sooner than expected, and the car was delivered ahead of my imagination.

Photo taken right after the car arrived at the dealer

A friend of my husband happened to spot it at the dealer and kindly sent this photo

I had looked at the body color “Aventurine Green Metallic” many times on the configurator beforehand, but the actual color was even deeper and cooler than I imagined. My husband said,

I was torn over the body color, but I’m really glad we went with this one. It seems quite popular overseas, but not many people choose it in Japan, so I rarely see it on the streets, which I like. As someone who likes to stand out, I’m very satisfied. It’s incredibly understated and feels like a grown-up 911. I think it suits the base model 911 perfectly.

As for the delivery itself, I really wanted to be there, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find anyone to watch the kids that day… so only my husband went to pick up the 911 Cabriolet. If our eldest son were a bit older, I would have taken him along, but a newborn less than a month old was just impossible…

So, my husband took some photos of the delivery.

Because it has the Sport Design Package, the aero parts differ from the standard model.

I can only imagine the excitement and nervousness my husband felt meeting his new car for the first time. Thanks to the coating, the body gleamed beautifully and looked stunning.

After my husband drove the 911 Cabriolet home, I asked, “How does it feel to drive?” and he said,

Well, it’s actually firmer than I expected. It’s much stiffer than the Boxster and even feels close to the 991.2 GTS I had for a while with cup tires. But I’ve only driven about 20 km so far, so the suspension and bushings are still quite stiff. Also, the tire pressures are fully inflated and not set to comfort pressure, which might be a factor. I’ll see how it feels after driving it more.

That day, I also took a short drive with my daughters in the back, and compared to the 992 I test drove before, the ride was definitely firm. However, it wasn’t an unpleasant firmness; rather, it felt like a true sports car with a solid connection to the road. The sturdy body and strong suspension captured the road surface well and conveyed road feedback clearly — a very good kind of firmness.

At least, it’s not so stiff that it would be tiring on long drives.

Over the next few days, my husband drove about 400 km on various roads, adjusted the tire pressures, and set them to comfort pressure. Then,

It changed completely!!! It got so much better! Especially after about 300 km, the stiffness in the chassis eased, and it became very supple. You can really tell that this 992 was designed with the air-cooled era 911 in mind, not just in looks but in its character. I often see reviews from people who only test drove the 992 briefly saying, “The 911 has become too much like a regular car and lost its fun,” but from my 400 km experience since delivery, I partly agree but mostly disagree. Porsche is clearly taking the car in a different direction from the 991 and earlier models. I think Porsche made the 992 because they didn’t want to be told that. This is a proper 911. I feel like writing a very long review (laughs).

He was so excited, so I’m planning to have him write a detailed review later (laughs).

Once things settle down a bit, I’d love to take a mid-distance drive myself!
