The Background and Decision Behind Porsche’s Withdrawal from F1
Porsche has long explored the possibility of entering Formula 1.
In particular, in 2022, negotiations progressed with Red Bull Racing, including a large-scale plan for Porsche to acquire 50% of the power unit division of Red Bull’s F1 team. However, talks between the two companies broke down in September 2022. Red Bull CEO Christian Horner cited “a mismatch in the direction of both brands” as the reason.
Subsequently, Red Bull announced a partnership with Ford starting in the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Audi, also part of the VW Group, decided to enter F1 as an engine supplier and is moving forward with acquiring Sauber.
Now, Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche’s Motorsport Division, has clearly stated “Our ambition to enter F1 is over.” This is the first official statement from Porsche regarding F1 since the new 2026 regulations were announced.
Laudenbach declared, “F1 is a closed chapter for us,” making it clear that F1 is no longer within Porsche’s reach.
Porsche’s Clear Position
Laudenbach emphasized Porsche’s withdrawal from F1 by stating, “F1 is not our current challenge, and we will not invest energy there.” He praised Porsche’s current motorsport activities as “an almost perfect fit for the brand,” signaling a focus on existing motorsport programs rather than pursuing F1.
For Porsche, F1 is no longer a priority, and the current portfolio is more than satisfactory. This decision effectively ends any near-term possibility of returning to F1 since supplying engines over 30 years ago.
Porsche’s Current Motorsport Strategy
Laudenbach elaborated on Porsche’s current motorsport focus, which spans the following areas:
1. Customer Racing: From track days to GT4, one-make series, and professional GT racing (GT3)
2. Endurance Racing: Competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and IMSA SportsCar Championship with the 963 LMDh, in partnership with Penske
3. Formula E: Participating in the only fully electric top-level series as part of the brand’s electrification strategy
Laudenbach stated, “We are very busy and highly satisfied with our current activities,” underscoring that there is no need to pursue F1.
Impact of Porsche’s F1 Withdrawal and Future Outlook
Porsche’s decision to withdraw from F1 will have a notable impact on the motorsport world. The absence of such a historic brand could influence the competitive landscape and technological development directions within F1.
On the other hand, by focusing more on existing programs, Porsche is likely to achieve even greater success in GT racing, endurance racing, and electric race cars. Especially, its participation in Formula E is closely tied to Porsche’s electrification strategy and is expected to continue playing a key role.
With Porsche closing the door on F1, motorsport fans will turn their attention to how the company performs and innovates in other racing series. Porsche’s decision may also serve as a catalyst for renewed appreciation of motorsport disciplines outside of F1.
Finally, it will be interesting to see how Porsche’s F1 withdrawal influences other automakers considering entering F1. The sport is always seeking new entrants, and Porsche’s choice could become a factor in other companies’ decisions. Watching the future development of F1 and the broader motorsport strategies of the automotive industry will be essential.
