Installing ICE FUSE on Our Porsche 911 (Air-Cooled 964 Model)

Recommended Car Accessories

A little while ago, my husband installed something called an ICE FUSE, and he wrote an article about it, so I’d like to share it with you.

The other day, while browsing social media, I came across a post saying, “I installed an ICE FUSE on my air-cooled Porsche.” Curious, I looked into what it was, and it sounded quite interesting. So, I ordered one right away and installed it on our air-cooled 911 (964 model).

What is ICE FUSE?

ICE FUSE is a tuning fuse that uses an ultra-low temperature cooling process. It’s frozen with liquid nitrogen at -196°C to align the metal atoms, improving electrical conductivity. This is said to enhance responsiveness and acceleration feel.

Originally, this cooling treatment was used in the audio world to improve sound quality, but now it’s been adapted for cars.

I immediately searched for an ICE FUSE for Porsche and found an authorized dealer. They offer versions for the 964 and 993, so I ordered the 964 model right away.

After ordering, the company president contacted me and said, “We’re very close by, so if you like, I can hand it to you in person.” Checking the address, it really was nearby. It’s a place where I often see Porsches parked, so I’d always been curious about it.

When I visited and talked with him, I was surprised to learn he’s well-known in the Porsche RWB community and occasionally visits the Royu Driveway. We even have several mutual acquaintances. The connections that come through Porsche never cease to amaze me.

We had a great chat about cars and business, exchanged information, and parted ways. Once the COVID situation settles down, I’d love to have a longer conversation.

Installing ICE FUSE on the Porsche 911

Installing the ICE FUSE is very simple. Unless you’re extremely clumsy, anyone should be able to do it. For the 964, you remove the carpet from the top of the front trunk space and open the fuse box located there.

To be safe and avoid any unexpected shorts, disconnect the battery terminal before starting work.

Inside, many fuses are tightly packed, but just follow the included instructions to pull out the fuse you want to replace and swap it with the ICE FUSE.

As long as you don’t drop or lose any fuses, the whole process should take about 10 minutes.

How effective is the ICE FUSE?

After swapping it in, I took the car for a test drive to feel the difference. Just to be clear, this article is not an advertisement for ICE FUSE—I personally bought it with my own money and am simply sharing my honest review.

Clear improvements I noticed

  • The engine starts more powerfully. The usual “whirr, chug-chug” start changed to a lively “whirr, vroom!” The tachometer needle jumps a bit higher than usual at startup.
  • The car stereo’s sound quality improved. This was quite noticeable, especially in the high frequencies, which became clearer and less muffled.
  • The headlights became brighter.

Possible improvements I felt

  • The engine’s rotation feels smoother, especially noticeable when the air conditioning is on. Usually, the AC compressor causes a slight power drop, but this felt less pronounced.
  • The Tiptronic (automatic transmission) shifts seem quicker. This is just a feeling, but the gear changes felt sharper and more immediate.

Overall power didn’t feel dramatically different, but the improved engine rotation made driving more enjoyable.

Compared to regular fuses, ICE FUSE is a bit pricey, but if you own a 964 or 993, it might be worth trying as a refresh for your car.
